A pictorial movement inseparable from the Golden Age of the Dutch United Provinces, broadly speaking the 17th century, heir to the realist movement of Flemish primitive art. Although it was still closely related to Flemish Baroque, the Dutch Golden Age departed from it in many respects, abandoning idealising scenes and an emphasis on splendour. Religious scenes became rarer during this period, as Calvinism prohibited religious paintings in churches.
