A French painter and art copyist, Marthouret described himself as a "stakhanovist of painting". He painted more than 13,000 pictures, carbon copies of famous paintings of all styles, as well as personal works, most of which are part of the Brute Art movement. He was one of the most gifted forgers of the 20th century. Capable of copying the paintings of great masters and deceiving experts, his art landed him in prison.
